Wanaka Movement Meets Learning

How Movement Builds the Brain.

Understand what it looks like, why it’s happening, and practical ways to support kids at home and in the classroom

Come along for a practical, down-to-earth session that connects the dots between movement and learning. We’ll look at why more and more of our pēpi and tamariki are arriving at ECE and primary school with gaps in their learning, what that can look like day-to-day, and most importantly, what we can do about it. You’ll hear Robyn Polley share 15 years of presenting, study and research on what’s changed, why it’s changed, and the impact it’s having on our kids.

Topics we’ll touch on: brain development and crossing the midline (dominant hand/helping hand and links to reading and writing), proprioception and spatial awareness (why some kids bite, trip, fall, slide off chairs or dislike touch), the vestibular system (balance, posture, concentration and motion sickness), and primitive reflexes (why they matter and what happens when integration is interrupted). You’ll leave with simple, effective ways to support and “fix” these issues through practical movement opportunities.

FAB 4 - Screen Time - Educator Series

Young children, including toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age kids, are increasingly showing signs of stress and anxiety. What role does screen time play in this? How do we reverse the impact?

Raglan FAB 3 - Balance and Coordination - Educator Series

Vestibular System - Balance & Coordination

A child’s vestibular system needs to be activated and stimulated throughout life. This inner ear system impacts on a person's ability to control balance and coordination. More children are now uncoordinated, trip often, fall off chairs, motion sickness, slouch or lie across the floor or tables all impacting their ability to focus and be present.

Raglan FAB 2 - Spacial Awareness - Educator Series

Proprioception System (Spatial Awareness)

As a child learns to move, they begin to become aware of their body parts, where their body is in relation to the physical environment around them, and what their body looks like. When a child has opportunities to move in a variety of environments they learn about spatial awareness. These tamariki are often sedentary, fall off chairs-out of bed, bump into others, trip and fall and are hesitant to join in to running games and act out suddenly.

Raglan FAB 1 - Brain Dev & Crossing The Midline - Community Series

We know that fundamental movement activities help develop the holistic brain. Why is movement and movement progressions crucial for brain development? What happens when stages are missed? What do the issues look like and how do we overcome them!

When we cross our mid-line, we are giving both sides of the brain the opportunity to “talk” to each other. This is crucial in developing a dominant hand and a helping hand, allowing tamariki to complete all major self-care tasks, but when underdeveloped can impact on a child’s reading and writing.

FAB 1 - Reflex Integration - Educator Series

Primitive reflexes play a crucial role in a babies survival and early development. As a child moves through milestones, these reflexes should integrate, allowing more mature movement patterns and higher-level learning to emerge. When primitive reflexes fail to integrate they can become retained reflexes, causing challenges. Retained reflexes can hinder development and prevent the acquisition of higher-level skills.
